"In unity there is strength; in separation, disaster." This attitude guided the founding fathers of Kappa Kappa Psi as they sought to create a brotherhood of band members to promote interest in band music, fellowship among band members, and student leadership through service to the college or university band. William Scroggs of Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, OK (now Oklahoma State University) envisioned this great brotherhood, and enlisted the support of the band president, A. Frank Martin. In addition to William Scroggs and A. Frank Martin, eight other dedicated band students - Raymond D. Shannon, Carl A. Stevens, Clyde Haston, Clayton E. Soule, William H. Coppedge, Asher Hendrickson, Dick Hurst, and Iron Hawthorne Nelson - helped Kappa Kappa Psi become a reality.
William Scroggs approached the Director of Bands and Head of the Music Department at Oklahoma A&M, Professor Bohumil "Boh" Makovsky, to gain his support in the creation of the fraternity. Boh was a strong proponent of anything that fosters better music and wholeheartedly supported Scroggs's idea. Boh provided the guidance and encouragement needed by the charter members of the fraternity.
